As a government lawyer for many years, I have to say this whole thing about citizenship and entitlement to sit in Parliament and be a Minister has gone so far past being a farce that I can only describe it as (Ir)esponsible Government by disingenuous power and privilege preserving ploys by a number of political players.
Whilst I acknowledge the limited “savings” provisions in the Commonwealth of Australia’s Acts Interpretation Act, Responsible Government, as I understand it, seems to be being subsumed by a more preservation of power politics.
Is that good for the rule of Law?
I think not.
We are in a peculiar situation which I think probably will warrant the Governor General having to have a serious afternoon tea talk with the PM soon – very soon.
